When was the last time you were excited about an OS update?
I think the last time I was excited was maybe Windows 8? Though it ended up being awkward and disappointing. I think windows 10 was kindof exciting too, but at that point I was thinking it was just a return to Windows 7, but with some optimizations?
To be fair, all of this is from a user who doesn't need anything special from an operating system. As long as my browser works, Docker works, and my IDE works, I'm happy. When I used windows I was also very excited to have access to WSL when that came out.
These days I upgrade my OS with very little thought or excitement. I'm on MacOS now and I was originally dragged into this ecosystem kicking and screaming, now I think it's fine.
But that's exactly what I think it odd. I think all this is "fine". I haven't had an OS upgrade in a long time that I was excited about. I upgraded to Tahoe yesterday (I also got a new machine) and I was thinking "hopefully nothing breaks and this new UI is kinda fun." My expectations for the new AI features (do they even exist?) were basically nil, and I don't think I've naturally encountered them? And this is coming from someone who uses a lot of AI tooling every day and quite likes it.
Maybe all of this is good: if everything just works and I never have to think about my OS, that's probably a good thing in many ways and a sign of success. But I miss being excited about new releases and OS features? I'm sure there are enterprise nerds who are super excited about different releases for much more complex security, networking, etc. features. But as a pretty average user, I think it's all just very "meh".
